How to Choose Between Indoor and Open-Air Wedding Spaces

How to Choose Between Indoor and Open-Air Wedding Spaces

Choosing between indoor and open-air wedding spaces shapes the mood, flow of the day, and even how your wedding is experienced in real time.

At Strock Enterprises, we have three distinct venues on our preserved family farm in Mechanicsburg, PA, and couples come to us specifically because they don't have to commit to just one option before they understand the differences.

What Each Space Actually Feels Like

We have three venues on this farm, and each does something different. The right fit depends on your guest count, season, and how you want the day to feel. Walk through each one before you decide.

The Catering Barn: Structure That Works for You

The Catering Barn seats up to 150 guests and comes with natural light, modern bathrooms, changing rooms, and climate control. If you're getting married in January or August in central Pennsylvania, that matters. The changing rooms, in particular, make your wedding morning easier. You're not scrambling for a separate location to get ready.

Most couples appreciate that the venue allows them to host their ceremony, reception, and catering in one location, depending on their chosen setup and availability. The Catering Barn includes tables, chairs, on-site staff support, and modern event amenities. Catering, including charcoal-grilled meats and signature dishes, is available through Strock Enterprises’ in-house team. We handle trash and recycling. These aren't glamorous details, but they're the ones that keep a wedding running without interruptions.

The Corn Crib: A Comfortable Space for Intimate Celebrations

Seats 65 guests at round tables, and it's an all-season facility with rustic character and modern amenities. For intimate weddings, The Corn Crib is a strong option for smaller guest counts and more intimate celebrations. Our Intimate Wedding Package is built around this space, covering up to 50 guests with 7 total hours, a sweetheart table, a sound system, a one-hour ceremony rehearsal, and gratuity included.

That rehearsal slot, typically on a Thursday, gives you a chance to walk through the space before the day itself. Couples who've used it come into their ceremony noticeably calmer.

The Turkey Pen: Open Air on a Preserved Farm

The Turkey Pen is our open-air venue with ceiling fans, ambient lighting, and electricity for DJs and AV equipment. It seats up to 250 banquet style guests, with up to 300. Modern bathrooms and handicap accessibility are both in place. It does not include a sound system or heating and air conditioning, so that's worth building into your planning if you're considering it.

What it does offer is a sense of place you can't replicate indoors. The farm has been in the family for over 100 years. None of the surrounding land has been developed. You're not looking at a strip mall from across the parking lot.

Which Space Fits Your Guest Count

Under 65 guests, the Corn Crib. Between 65 and 150, the Catering Barn. Over 150 and up to 300, the Turkey Pen. Some couples use more than one space for different parts of the day, a ceremony in one area and reception in another, though you'll want to confirm configurations when you schedule your tour.

Season matters too. The Catering Barn and Corn Crib are climate-controlled. The Turkey Pen is open-air with ceiling fans. Spring and fall in Mechanicsburg can be genuinely beautiful outdoors. Midsummer heat and winter cold are worth thinking through before committing to it.

What's Included With Your Booking

All three spaces include tables and chairs, on-site staff, parking, modern restrooms, and trash and recycling service. Catering packages include full buffet service, non-alcoholic beverages, appetizers, formal plastic settings with linen-look napkins, rolls, buffet setup and teardown, dessert cutting and serving, table bussing, and packaging of leftovers.

Outside catering is not permitted. Homemade food may be brought in. The minimum guest count for catering is 50. Children under 2 are free, and ages 2 through 9 are charged at half price.

Conclusion

Every couple starts with a different picture in their head. Some want walls and warmth. Some want open air and room to spread out. At Strock Enterprises, you don't have to guess which one fits. You can walk all three spaces on the same preserved farm, on the same afternoon, and leave with a clear answer.
