Indoor vs Open-Air Wedding Reception Spaces in Mechanicsburg

One of the first real questions couples ask us is whether to go indoors or to the open air. That choice affects your timeline, guest comfort, and the overall atmosphere of your celebration. We have three distinct spaces on our 80+ acre preserved family farm here in Mechanicsburg, PA, and each one serves a different kind of celebration. Here’s a closer look at how each space works for different wedding styles and guest counts.
How Each Space Actually Works for a Wedding Reception
We have three venue spaces on the farm, and each one serves a genuinely different event. Guest count, season, and the atmosphere you want your guests to walk into are the three things that will point you toward the right one.

The Catering Barn: Enclosed Reception Space for Up to 150 Guests
The Catering Barn is our fully enclosed reception option. It's heated and air-conditioned, so your guests stay comfortable whether you're celebrating in July or November. Natural light fills the space during the day, and the building includes modern bathrooms, dedicated changing rooms, and handicap accessible entry with parking.
Those changing rooms matter more than people expect. Having a private space to bustle a dress, touch up, or prepare before the reception begins is one of those practical details that makes the whole day feel less rushed. It's something couples consistently mention after the fact.
Your venue rental includes tables and chairs, on site staff support, parking, modern restrooms, and trash and recycling service. Catering is available through our in house team, with charcoal grilled meats and buffet service included in catering packages. Our team has been cooking over charcoal and roasting whole pigs since 1983. Many of our recipes have been passed down through generations, and we also have a trained chef on staff who previously operated a high-end restaurant, whether you have 50 guests or 150.
The Turkey Pen: Open Air Reception Space for Large Weddings
The Turkey Pen is our open-air venue, and it's where we direct couples who want real capacity and a genuine connection to the farm setting. It seats up to 250 banquet style guests and up to 300 for larger receptions. Ceiling fans keep air moving during warm weather, and the space includes ambient lighting, modern bathrooms, handicap accessible design, and electricity for your DJ or AV setup.
What surrounds your guests here is preserved farmland. Our property has been in the family for over 100 years and hasn't been sold off or developed. You won't find shopping centers or subdivisions in the background. The preserved farmland setting gives couples a quiet backdrop close to Harrisburg and Carlisle.
One thing couples should keep in mind is that the Turkey Pen does not include a built-in sound system or climate control. Your DJ brings their own equipment, which most do, and the open-air design makes this a seasonal consideration. Late spring through early fall works beautifully.
The Corn Crib: Intimate Wedding Space for Smaller Guest Lists
The Corn Crib is for the couple who never wanted a 200-person wedding in the first place. It's an all-seasons facility with rustic character and modern amenities that seats up to 65 guests. Our intimate wedding package in this space includes a 4.5-hour event window, a sound system, a sweetheart table, six round tables with chairs, and a one-hour ceremony rehearsal, typically scheduled on a Thursday.
What Every Booking Includes
Regardless of which space you choose, your rental at Strock Enterprises includes tables and chairs, trash and recycling service, parking, modern restrooms, and dedicated on-site staff throughout your event. Our team is ServSafe certified, and our bartenders hold RAMP certification. We're fully licensed and insured.
Catering is handled exclusively by our in-house team. Outside catering companies are not permitted, though guests are welcome to bring homemade food. Our wedding catering packages include full buffet service, non-alcoholic beverages, appetizers, formal plastic settings with linen-look napkins, rolls with dinner, and complete buffet setup, maintenance, and teardown.
Dessert cutting and serving is included, and we package your leftovers before we leave. Our menu ranges from marinated boneless pork chops and slow-roasted beef brisket to shrimp au gratin, whole pig roast, and grilled chicken in our Strock Special Marinade.
Conclusion
The Corn Crib works well for couples planning a smaller celebration with a more personal atmosphere. For couples who want an enclosed reception space with changing rooms and year-round comfort, the Catering Barn is a strong fit. The Turkey Pen is ideal for larger celebrations that want an open-air farm setting with room for a larger guest list. At Strock Enterprises, all three share the same preserved farm, the same on-site catering team, and the same family that has been running this property since 1913.
